Sean Murphy assumed the position of Chargé d'Affaires at the United States Embassy in El Salvador on January 02, 2011. Mr. Murphy is a native of the state of Pennsylvania. He graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1986 with an M.A. in Russian and Eastern European History. Mr. Murphy joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1988 and has served in India, Spain, Kuwait, Chile, Cuba, and Mexico. In Washington from 1993-1998, he worked in the State Department’s Office of Cuban Affairs and the Office of Mexican Affairs. His most recent assignment was as Consul General at the United States Embassy in Mexico City. Prior to service in Mexico City, Mr. Murphy was Consul General at the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, Cuba; he was a member of the U.S. delegation in Migration Talks with the Cuban government in 1995-1996 and again in 2009.
Mr. Murphy is married to Dr. Hengameh Rastegar-Murphy, a pediatrician at the University of Arizona Medical Center. The Murphys have two children, ages 13 and nine, and reside in Tucson, Arizona.
