El Salvador Wins Their World Cup Qualifier
September 9, 2008
Ambassador Charles L. Glazer and his Staff Assistant Amir Masliyah were guests of President of the Republic of El Salvador, Elias Antonio Saca Gonzalez, at the first qualifying round of the World Cup held at an overflowing Cuscatlan Stadium Saturday evening in San Salvador.
The diplomats and statesman discussed the strengths of the Salvadoran and Haitian teams and shared their views on strategies and upcoming matches.
It turned out to be a gala event as El Salvador proved too much for Haiti beating them soundly by the score of 5-0. Bouncing back from a loss to Costa Rica, El Salvador next travels to South America to take on the Surinam National Team this Wednesday.
The U.S. and El Salvador are both competing among the 35 national teams of CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) in the qualification stage for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. CONCACAF nations are competing for three slots automatically allotted to CONCACAF by FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association). The fourth place CONCACAF finisher will play a two game playoff with the South American Football Association’s fifth place finisher for a possible fourth slot in the 2010 World Cup.
