Comfort Starts Bringing Health to Salvadorans

On June 22, a ceremony with the participation of US Embassy Charge d'Affaires Robert Blau, Salvadoran Minister of Defense Colonel David Munguia Payes, and Salvadoran Health Minister Maria Isabel Rodriguez marked the start of the mission that will bring health care to hundreds of Salvadorans that live in the Department of La Union. The medical teams will be offering free health care for ten days in different areas of the department.

While in El Salvador, the medical teams from the Comfort will partner with local health care providers and community officials to provide free health care to communities with limited access to medical treatment. These services include general surgery, ophthalmologic surgery, basic medical evaluation and treatment, preventive medicine, dental screenings and treatment, optometry screenings, eyeglass distribution, veterinary services, and public health training.

The Comfort teams will also carry out five Medical Training Exercises in different municipalities in La Union: Jose Pantoja hijo Educational Center, June 22 to June 26; Republic of Argentina School in San Alejo, June 22 to June 24; Loma Larga Educational Center, June 25 to June 28; Ramon Mendoza Educational Center in Pasaquina, June 27 to July 1 and El Carmen Educational Center, June 29 to July 1.

El Savadors assistance to carry out this exercise went further than just planning the medical brigades on board. Two Salvadoran health professionals, a doctor and a nurse, have been part of this important mission that will benefit 7 countries in the Western Hemisphere. Dr. Carla Shonenberg said that the fact that they have been part of this important mission in the hemisphere has been a life changing experience.

This is the Comforts second mission to El Salvador. In 2007, the Comfort offered its services in Sonsonate.
