Bidding for Northern Highway Continues
Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) implementing partner in El Salvador, FOMILENIO opened up the bidding process for six construction companies competing for second stretch of the Northern Highway.
The tendered work, a 13.4 km stretch from El Matazano to Nueva Concepcion, includes improving, widening and paving the way to the tertiary road with 2 lanes each 3.25 meters, with a shoulder width of 1.50 meters at each end.
The MCC funded Northern Highway will link the Northern Zone to other parts of El Salvador and will connect Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, and is the major project under the $461 million compact between El Salvador and MCC. Spanning about 290 kilometers (180 miles), the highway is expected to extend from the Guatemalan border in the northwest corner of El Salvador, across the northern part of the country to the Honduran border in the east. The construction of the highway will provide immediate jobs, spur regional trade, and help build a long-term foundation for new business activity in the region.
The first construction contract, signed in April, covers 23 kilometers of road including 150 meters over the Río Lempa, the largest river in the country.
