Charge Robert Blau hands out the order to initiate work to renew and improve facilities in one of the 20 middle schools benefitted with the program in the Northern Zone, as President Mauricio Funes observes.

On August 13, President Mauricio Funes delivered the work orders to start the improvement of 20 high schools in the northern zone of El Salvador. These works are part of the Human Development component of the compact between El Salvador and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

“All of us gathered here today recognize the direct link between economic development and education. The delivery of these work orders are proof of the commitment all the participants have with allowing the people full participation in the economic activities of their communities. By investing in people, these programs guarantee human development”, said Charge d’Affaires Robert Blau, who attended the event.

As head of FOMILENIO, the entity responsible for implementing the compact, Jose Angel Quiros said that “the support given through the Human Development component will allow more than 11 thousand low income youth receive higher quality education, which will enable them to have a better quality of life and to reach for better opportunities.”

The 20 high schools were chosen from a total of 75 that exist in El Salvador’s northern zone and were chosen according to the level of poverty and other studies including a gender study. El Salvador and the MCC have a $461 million compact to develop the northern zone of the country.
