USDOJ/OPDAT sponsors special anti gang training conference

In view of the growing concerns in the region regarding gang violence, the Office for International Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training of the US Department of Justice, (USDOJ/OPDAT) is carrying out a special course on the topic of prevention and intervention to prevent gang violence. The conference is being held at the International Law Enforcement Academy located at the headquarters of the ANSP in Santa Tecla.  It began Monday September 18th and will  conclude Friday the September 29th.

Forty law enforcement officers and prosecutors from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico are participating in this conference, in an effort to strengthen the security cooperation and exchange of information between the region and the United States of America.  The participants from El Salvador come from the National Council of Public Security (CNSP), the Prosecutor’s Office, and Police Agents from the intelligence, analysis and youth services divisions of the PNC.

The course gives the participants the opportunity to exchange information regarding the laws existing in each of their countries in their combat against gangs. A US prosecutor will refer to the evidence and cooperation topics of the suspects during a trial.  The teams of prosecutors and police officers from Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and El Salvador will present specific cases from their countries, where they investigated and processed gang members.  The group will visit a Salvadoran prison and a model precinct.

A description of the gangs problems existing in each country and in the region will be presented during the conference.  The federal law enforcement agents from the United States will discuss successful experiences adopted in that country, the formation of special task groups, gang migration, identification systems using finger prints, gangs intelligence, gangs investigation, gangs interrogation and arms control.  During the conference, a description of the gangs problem in each country and throughout the region will be addressed.
