(07-20-2011) Security Information

This message informs U.S. citizens in El Salvador about safety and security information available to the public on the Embassy website.

The U.S. Embassy in San Salvador reminds U.S. citizens of the danger of visiting local gentlemen's clubs or striptease bars in El Salvador, especially in light of recent media reports of criminal incidents taking place at or near these clubs.  They include the shooting of a security guard outside a popular club this past weekend.  These establishments have been placed off-limits to all official U.S. citizens (all personnel in El Salvador under Chief of Mission authority, including Eligible Family Members).  The Embassy advises private U.S. citizens to avoid these establishments as well.  The Embassy will continue to monitor the situation.

The U.S. Embassy strongly encourages U.S. citizens to routinely monitor the Embassy website for important and helpful notices regarding safety and security in El Salvador.  The Embassy's web site can be accessed at U.S. Embassy San Salvador.

Messages for U.S. Citizens apply to all of El Salvador.  Topics range from large scale weather events, disasters, national elections and U.S. voting information.  They are also sent via email to all electronic registrants.

Security Notices concern localized and/or spontaneous events such as protests, traffic jams and large gatherings of people.  These are posted on the Embassy’s website as needed but are not sent as messages.

As always, please keep the Embassy’s Personal Security Suggestions in mind.
