2005 Ambassador Speeches

Remarks at Dinner in honor CODEL Davis

Ambassador Remarks
May 11, 2005

El Salvador is our staunch friend and ally, a country led by a president who clearly shares our vision for a prosperous and peaceful future in this region. El Salvador was the first country to ratify the Central America-DR Free Trade Agreement with the United States, and it hosts the only anti-drug Cooperative Security Location in Central America. You will have the opportunity to visit the CSL tomorrow, and I think you will understand why we are proud of it and of Salvadoran cooperation in the fight against illegal drugs.

I am delighted that such a powerful, bipartisan Congressional delegation is here in El Salvador to learn more about issues of common interest. I know that many of you in the Delegation have been here before, and I hope you share with me the strong affection Dee and I have for this country and its people.

I want to underscore tonight the joint commitment our two nations have to increasing trade, economic development, and jobs in our countries and in the region.

The United States and El Salvador are also committed to working together to combat terrorism, criminal gang violence, and trafficking in drugs, other contraband, and even people. These types of international crime pose a threat to us all.

Now it is my pleasure to introduce to you Congressman Davis, from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Thank you.

Thank you.
