Changes in Passports Fees, Cards, Minors under 16 Parental Consent Requirements, And Passport Applications

New U.S. Passport Fees
Effective date: February 1, 2008.
- Fees will be changing
Why are the fees changing?
Fees are being adjusted to cover the cost of providing efficient and secure passport services including infrastructure, technology, and staff.
Passport applications fees:
- Passport applications for minors under 16 will increase from $82 to $85.
- First time passport applications for people over 16 and replacements for lost, stolen or damaged passports will increase from $97 to $100.
- Passport applications for the renewal of a ten year passport issued within the last fifteen years will increase from $67 to $75.
- Parental Consent Requirement:
- Beginning February 1, 2008, all children under 16 applying for passports will need the consent of both parents. There are special circumstances that apply in the case of a deceased parent or a parent with sole custody. Before February 1, 2008, this rule applied to children under 14.
- Passport Application Format:
- Beginning February 1, 2008, passport applications (DS-11 and DS-82) and are under a new format. The new forms will be available at the American Citizen Services Unit of the Embassy and at the Department of State web site http://travel.state.gov.
