American Citizen Services Newsletter April

Ensuring Safety When Traveling Abroad

Every year American Embassies and Consulates help over 200,000 Americans traveling or living abroad who have been victims of crime, accidents, natural disasters, and unexpected illnesses or who need to be contacted about family emergencies. To better assist Americans in these situations, the State Department recently launched an online travel registration website. The website allows Americans who are traveling or living abroad to create a custom profile and register their itinerary and/or contact information. By keeping their information current, anyone who registers can ensure that the Embassy or family members will be able to get in touch with them should such a situation arise. Additionally, they will be able to get the most up-to-date travel information on the countries they plan on visiting. Please access the site going to travel.state.gov and clicking on the link or by going directly to https://travelregistration.state.gov/. Please remember that registering on this site is not considered proof of American Citizenship and that information will only be released to family members with prior written consent.

New Yellow Fever Vaccination Requirements

On Monday April 7th, the government of El Salvador started to require all travelers who are returning from or traveling to the continent of Africa or certain countries in South America to be vaccinated against yellow fever. The vaccination needs to take place 10 days prior to traveling to or from El Salvador. Countries affected in South America are Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela.  Please refer to the Salvadoran Immigration website for more information at  http://www.seguridad.gob.sv/.
